Estate, Business and Tax Planning for Families and Their Holdings
A. Kel Long, III, received his undergraduate degree (B.A.) in Accounting from the University of Mississippi. Mr. Long received his law degree (J.D.), with distinction, from Emory University and was awarded the Georgia Tax Conference Tax Scholar Award as the outstanding Emory Law School tax student in his graduating class.
Kel's law practice is concentrated in estate planning, tax planning, business formation and reorganization, partnerships, tax controversies, special needs/settlement trusts, and corporate law. He also speaks to various professional and industry groups regarding estate planning, and gives the annual update on estate planning for the Georgia Bar’s Update on Georgia Law seminar which is seen by over 2,000 lawyers each year. Kel began his own law firm, A. Kel Long, III, P.C., in 1994.
Kel is active in professional organizations and is the past President of the Atlanta Bar Association Estate Planning and Probate Section, having previously served as Treasurer and editor of the Section’s newsletter, The Mortmain. He is presently chair of the legislation sub-committee studying the repeal of the rule against perpetuities, which if repealed, would allow perpetual trusts in Georgia.
Kel has also been active in Ducks Unlimited for the past 17 years, having served as Georgia State Chairman, and currently serves as Senior Vice President – Development and is on the Board of Directors of Ducks Unlimited, Inc., Ducks Unlimited Canada and Wetlands America Trust. He has also served as an assistant scout master for the St. James Methodist Boy Scout troop.
Kel is also a Certified Public Accountant and prior to law school was employed with the Houston, Texas office of the national public accounting firm, Price Waterhouse.
Kel is admitted to practice in Georgia and is licensed as a CPA in Georgia. He was awarded the Honorable Mention Award by the Mississippi Society of CPA’s for successfully completing the May 1982 CPA exam in his first sitting.
